Description
Teach Yourself to Sing – Module 5 marks an important stage in vocal development by introducing the Perfect Fifth, one of the strongest and most expressive musical intervals. At the same time, students take their first steps into a professional recording environment while continuing to develop intonation, articulation, rhythm, vocal flexibility, and musical expression.
The module begins with an introduction to studio microphone technique. Students learn how to prepare physically and mentally for recording, communicate with a sound engineer, adjust headphone monitoring, balance their voice with the accompaniment, record separate musical sections, and select the best performance from several takes. Special attention is given to vocal dynamics, clear articulation, and expressive interpretation.
The central musical focus is the Perfect Fifth. Students gradually learn to hear, recognize, and accurately sing ascending and descending fifths while maintaining stable breath support, balanced resonance, smooth vocal transitions, and precise intonation. This training develops confidence in wider melodic leaps while preserving relaxed and natural vocal production.
The module contains eight carefully structured vocal warm-ups that combine Perfect Fifth intervals with legato and staccato singing, dotted rhythms, triplets, articulation exercises, vowel work, and increasingly complex melodic patterns. Special syllable combinations and pronunciation exercises develop coordination of the tongue, lips, and jaw while improving diction and clarity of consonants.
Students also expand their rhythmic skills through triplets, dotted rhythms, and changing tempos, learning to coordinate rhythm with breathing, dynamics, articulation, and interval accuracy. Each exercise progresses through three practical stages: singing with the teacher, performing with bass accompaniment, and finally singing with full piano accompaniment in different keys through systematic transposition.
The module concludes with a glossary covering the Perfect Fifth, digraph, and triplet, followed by four theoretical and practical assessments. By completing Module 5, students develop more accurate intonation, stronger articulation, improved rhythmic precision, greater vocal flexibility, better studio microphone skills, and increased confidence when performing independently with bass, piano, and professional backing tracks.
